I set it for AM29 and 5V, then I read, and I get all FFs.

Any idea?

Bad contact or bad chip. Is the chip from a working unit?

Yes from a working Transmission Control Unit from BMW.

Would the programmer erase the code in the unit if no contact?

yes, it can erase but not all data (only data where pin has correct connection).

Do you have right orientation (pin1 of chip to pin1 of adapter?)
Try a little bend the pins. Chip ID must be correctly readed.
