Hey whats up..
who ever reads this thanks in advance..
please excuse me if its a little long..
and maybe a little hard to read..
i have ADD..and typing is kinda hard for me..

not sure this is the right place to ask a question like this..
but it does have something to do with a Flash chip..
and it does seem like you people know about Chips around here..
anyways..
i bought this Abit NF7-S ver.2 motherboard off this guy on ebay..
(gota love the Blind faith of believing people on Ebay)

well it wont Post..

the fans spin up..the hard drives spin up..
97% sure its the Bios Chip..(Winbond W39V040AP)
tried clearing the CMOS..8-10 times..
put in a new battry..
this last try i removed the battry and let it sit for 24 hours with the Cmos shorted on pin 3-2..

tried it with just the processor and the memory and the video card..
tried the stick of memory in every slot..
tried a PCI video card also thinking maybe something was wrong with the AGP slot

i know its not the..power supply..videocard..memory..processor..
because they all work in my other SYSTEMS..
i've built my share of systems so im not a Newbie..

im thinking of doing a Hot Flash..
(wonder if thats what real chip experts call it)
can i buy a W39V040AP or W39V040APZ and do a hot flash with a NEW chip.
or do i have to try it with the orginal chip..
you know Hot flash..
like pull the Bios chip from a working board..(using a PLCC chip puller from radioshack)
then push it back in half way to make contacts..
boot up into DOS..
and at the A prompt pull the chip..and put in a NEW chip..
then flash the Bios in Dos from a floppy..

can i do it that way..and use a new chip OR do i have to use the Orginal bad chip..
1 more question..
can i use a diffrent brand mother board with the same type PLCC socket..
like say the bad boards an Abit..
can i try and use a Gigabyte..or a Asus...to try the hot flash
or will i have to 100% use the same exact type NF7-S ver.2 board

i hope i said all this right..
sorry if it was a little hard reading..
thanks for any reply you give..

I do not have knowledge on Hot Flash. But I know you have to use exact same type chip to do that. Otherwise it may not flash due to the different chip ID. If you use a external BIOS chip programmer to flash, then you can use any other read compatible chip. Also, I think you do not have many choices on the BIOS data file. You need to find the exact mother board BIOS data .bin file to refresh your bad bios chip. Different botherboard BIOS chip data files are not interchangeable.

hey ZLM

thanks for replying buddy
when you say
quote:
you have to use exact same type chip to do that. Otherwise it may not flash due to the different chip ID.

the orginal chip is manufactured by Winbond and the numbers on it are

Winbond
W39V040AP
233483201
345LGAA

on Winbonds web site they have a thing that says
Recommended Replacement for the W39V040AP is W39V040APZ

when i buy a chip, would i want to buy one that has the Orginal numbers
W39V040AP..OR would it be ok to use either..
AND
is there a concern about the other numbers on the orginal chip
233483201
345LGAA

im sorry if these seem like stupid questions but im not to expert with the chip industry and it seems like you guys on this fourm know more then most do when it comes to this aspect of consumer electronics..

thanks so much for your sharing of knowledge and making me a little smarter

The recommended replacement will work. The W39V040AP and W39V040APZ have same device ID.
