Okay, I just want a programmer to program pic chips, specifically I'm using the 16f84 chip. If I get the dual powered will I be able to use the zif socket or will I need to use the dip? Will I be able to use the pic basic compiler with these programmers?

You only can use onboard DIP socket I think.
