my gq-4x detects my mx25l1605 spi chip but it wont erase or write to it any help please

Did you tru to unprotect it? Click on the Lock button from toolbar.
Do you have second chip for testing?

tried all of the above but still no joy

Use slower speed.
Check pin 3, pin 7 connection
