I'm a little disappointed to see that I need a GQ-4X to program this PIC. Is there anything possible to do to program this PIC with the GQ3X?

The PIC18FXXXX chips need a special protocol to program it. It needs more memory on hardware to do the job. The GQ-4X is a upgrade hardware, it supports this chip.

I also chose the GQ-3X because it promised that it will support new chips because it has upgradeable firmware and everything, but now it does not support a simple PIC18Fxxxx :(
At that time there was no GQ-4X. Maybe it is possible though to add more memory and patch it to support those newer PICs? If its just a memory issue then I think it can be solved somehow.

So what happens if and when support is added for 16-bit data bus devices like PIC24 and dsPIC33?

Will the GQ-4X still work or will memory constraints require a yet-to-be-created GQ-5X as a programmer?

What looks interesting for me is that to write PIC18 you need only a piece of wire and a single resistor soldered to parallel port 25-pin DSUB then add 5V from USB connector and the rest is taken care by WinPic software. But for GQ-3X it is impossible task. Go figure..

Basically I think it is not just the technical issue, there are still some other things need to considered. what is your programmer firmware version?

Yes, because a whole PC with memory and CPU is completely the same as the GQ-3X's memory and CPU
