There are three version of Willem programmer available in MCU mall. You may have a difficult time when deciding which one should choose. Here are the some tips for your reference:

1.The Enhanced Willem programmer is mainly focused on Flash / EEPROM / Motheroard BIOS (12V or lower Vpp compliance device). Also, it has a fixed the 5V Vcc for the programming. Since it has three build-in adaptors on board, so it is the best for those people mainly working with BIOS,Flash,EEPROM, MCU devices. But, if you are working on NMOS EPROMs, such as 2716, 2732, 27128, then the Enhanced version is not good for you.

2.The standard willem (or dual powered willem) programmer can use AC as the power source. So, it can provide 12.7V Vpp, and adjustable Vcc (5V, 5.6V, 6.2V) based on the jumper setting.
Those features are very important when doing programming on UV erased EPROM devices. So, if you are mainly working on EPROM, the standard PCB3B Willem programmer may be the best for you. It will work good on NMOS EPROMs, such as 2716, 2732 etc.

3.The True USB Willem programmer is the new generation of Willem programmer. It uses USB port as communication and power supply port. The design fixed all design issues in Enhanced willem programmer. It will work on new laptop which does not have printer port and only has the USB port. It works much faster than printer port type of willem programmer. It will read device up to 20 times faster. Also, the software has better features and more stable.

4.If you are going to work on many different Flash/EEPROM/MCU devices, Enhanced Willem will be more easier to operate. Because tThe Enhanced willem uses a push button to select programming voltage and there are LEDs indicated the selected the voltage. Also, for the special chip jumper setting, it also uses a push button and LEDs.

5.The Standard Willem's schematic is available on the web. So, if you are knowing the electronic, then you will have the chance to modify the circuit on a standard willem. The new software may need some minor hardware changes for a special new software features. Eg. the version 0.97ja software has a new feature to un-protect Am29F040, but need the simple changes on the programmer hardware.

6. If you are willing working on laptop or in the field with the programmer. Then the True USB willem will be the only best Willem programmer for your. Also, the True USB Willem programmer works much faster on hi-density flash chip. Such as 29LV320, 29LV160 etc.

Where do we find the details for the "Modifications" that need to get done to the Enhanced?

The Enhanced Willem programmer is not designed for user to modify. There are no schematic published now. However, the main part for the circuit should be similar to willem PCB3B. If you are good in electonics, you may find some clue by refering to PCB3B's schematic.

Due to nature of this forum I hope my question will be tolerated! Do not kill me! I am novice.

The standard Willem (or dual powered Willem) programmer has only (as I can see at a picture) ZIF-32 socket. So, as I understand, I need adapters for all different packages. But does it mean that I need adapters for all DIP-packed components that have number of pins different from 32?

Yes. You are correct.
You need adapters for those DIP chips have pins more than 32. You also need adapter for those chips in package other than DIP 32.
However, as I know all programmer's, even hi-end professional programmers. They only build a DIP ZIF socket. All other packages chip need adapter.

Hi,

Are you erasing the device first?

To burn EEPROMs with dual power, do I have to use AC or can I just use USB?

EEPROM does not need AC power. The USB power is good enough.

Hi, can you tell me more about how to un-protect the Am29F040? I'm using a similar flash memory chip, and I cannot erase it, so this may be worth trying. :) I have yet to add the 2 extra 10k resistors however...

Hi guys,
I recently got the Enhanced Willem Programmer (5.0E) and I was wondering is it possible for me to use a Serial to USB converter lead to allow me to use it with my laptop,
If not, does the True USB Willem Programmer support all of the chips that the Enhanced does?
The only reason i bought the enhanced was because it will allow my to program broken BIOS chips for motherboards,
I didnt buy the USB one because it doesnt look like it is compatible with the same chips as the enhanced without a LOT of money being spent in adapter is this true?
Many thanks!

The "Serial to USB converter" does not work on (5.0E).

The True USB Programmer supports more chips than (5.0E).

The (5.0E) has on board two adapters more than True USB. Those are:
1. PLCC32-DIP28 (ADP-005 for US$8)
2. FWH/LPC+ (ADP-030 for US$15)

In the long run, I believe the True USB one is worth to buy.
