I just received my new programmer, and have burned a few chips. However, I often receive an error message "write failed at..."
Does this happen if the chip is not blank? Do I have to erase chips first?
I have successfully copied a program on to an ST M27C256, and then not been able to copy the same program to a different ST M27C256 chip.

The chip need to be erased before write any new data.

Do a blank check before write the data. This will tell you if the chip blank.
