I'm trying to read the AT25020 on the instrument cluster from a 2005 Chevy Astro.

I'm using GQ-4x4 with SOP16/8 DIP8 REV3 adaptor (don't know who made it, don't remember where I bought it but google images shows dozens from several makers and they all look just like mine).

Every time I attempt to read the chip I get all zeroes, every memory location shows 00.

I know that can't be right because I can verify that somewhere in there is the odometer reading which is 171522 and the trip odometer shows 1100.9.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

You need to power the cluster if you read in-circuit.

I thought the GQ provided power?

Thanks.

Yes, but not enough to power up the whole cluster. If you unsolder the chip you'll be fine.

Ah!

I can unsolder the chip "easily" enough but it's easier to power the cluster, so that's what I'll do.

Thanks.

Not so as it turns out.

When I power it up, it won't display (which doesn't matter much) and I can't get a read of the chip -- or, rather, I get numerous reads of the chip, each one different.

What made it work was reducing the speed to -2 (may not have to go that far down but that worked).

Don't forget to isolate power.

Probably a noise issue.

A buffer could help.
