New member, first post. I'm planning to read and program a few 27C512. I have what I believe is the PCB3 programmer (before the PLC sockets), USB cable and P/S wall wart. I've ordered a DB25 cable and PPort card to use with my Win 7/64 box. Downloaded .97ja software and with emulate Win97, it loads and starts perfectly. Configured dip switches and jumpers to match the diagram for the 27C512. While waiting for the parallel port stuff to arrive from Amazon, I was hoping to read an existing 27C512. I installed a programmed 27C512 in the ZIF with pin 1 up and left, but inserted the IC at the bottom of the ZIF socket as shown in the diagram. I get "Hardware Error. Test Power and Connections." Also tried the "Test Hardware" feature from the Help menu and get "Hardware Error. Test Power and Connections." Removed IC and get the same results. Do I need the PPort connections complete and configured before anything will work or am I doing something else wrong? Thanks! Jim

Yes, you need to have your printer port working correctly to use the programmer.

Thanks for the quick response. One last question. As the DB25 on the programmer is male and the connector on the computer LPT port is female, the standard cable with M/F ends will be an "extension" cable meaning the internal wiring will be straight through. Will this be correct for connecting the PCB3? Thanks again. Jim

Not 100% sure about that, maybe someone who still uses a parallel port could confirm this?

Just looked that up for you. Here's what I found; Parallel Data Cable (Printer extension cable, with male-female 25 pin connector, and pin to pin through)

You may want to have a look here; http://www.mcumall.com/support/DualPoweredWillemUserGuide.htm

anniel - nice catch and thanks for finding that for me. To anyone following this, the answer is yes. The correct cable is a DB25 extension cable meaning that it has a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other end. Pinout /wiring is straight through. Thanks again. Jim

OK....so I picked up a P-port card and installed it. Confirmed correct bios setup (ECP+EPP). Set the P-Port in the device manager to port 1 which matches the port selection in .97ja. No conflicts in the device manager. Started the software. Set the programmer to 27C512 and set the dip switches and jumpers as shown in the diagram. Not sure what ICSP (in the diagram) is, but there are no jumpers on the stakes. Connected the DB25, USB and power supply. No IC in the ZIF socket. Restarted software. From Help menu ran "Test Hardware" and I get "HARDWARE ERROR Check power and connection." I've double checked all the above. What am I doing wrong?

ICSP stands for in-circuit serial programming and should not have jumpers.
All seems right but I'm no PCB3 specialist. Someone more knowledgeable than me on the subject could probably help you better.

I don't think that's normal. Maybe your programmer is defective?

Do all the LED stay lit with only power connected?

I am having similar issues. Could it be that my printer port is faulty or what?

Nothing is Impossible

Try it with a printer.
