havent used this in months but the current software doesnt detect it

Does USB driver loaded correctly?
Check it in Windows Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.

moved it to back ports. seems front port isnt powered

No. Win95 does not support USB.

95 a and 95 b did not have usb support. 95c came out just before 98
